The name "Lancaster" is taken from John Lancaster, an early settler who donated land for the town's creation and also served as its first mayor. The current spelling of Lancaster comes from incorporation papers which spelled "Lancaster." The history of Lancaster begins with two settlements: one near what is now downtown Lancaster, and another on what is today called State Road 20-A north of town. These two sites date back to prior Native American times when they were used for hunting grounds and trading posts between different tribes or bands of Indian people living along either side of the Scioto River watershed area. By 1795, earlier traders had noted that there were large quantities of lead ore near present day downtown Lancaster In 1802, commissioners chosen by township meetings decided to form a new township within existing Livingston Township; this decision represented an increase in township membership from five residents per mile (8 km)² to twenty-five residents per mile (32 km²).
