TheBarnes family operated a bakery until 1886 when they sold it to James Cady for $1,500. In 1892, John Prentice founded the Lancaster woolen Mills with his brother-in-law Amos Wright as president and general manager. In 1899 Prentice bought out Wright's interest and renamed the company Prentice Woolens & Mill Corporation after himself (Prentice later served as mayor of Lancaster). In 1907–08 when steel mills were being constructed along the Unites States Coast Guard shipyard at Cleveland Bay, many new residents moved into Lancaster to work in those mills during their construction phase (which lasted into 1910). Many local residents also worked at Cady's Woolens while they awaited completion of that project; once that occurred they returned home to their homes or continued working there until 1915 when all production ceased because of World War I shortages of materialslloydornothingbeing manufactured then). After World War I ended there was little demand for clothing so much as demand for lumber which led to mills reopening again in 1922 but this time only producing paper products such as notepaper and envelopes which continued until shortly before World War II when all these mills closed again due to overproduction lloydornothingagainbecomingprofitableonlyafterthewarended].
