Lancaster, Ohio is a small town located in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 9,691 at the 2000 census and 11,574 in 2010. Lancaster is the most populous city in Delaware County. The first target shoot occurred on October 30, 1892, when a group of men from Lancaster shot ten arrows at an apple orchard near present-day downtown Lancaster. At that time it was the only target shoot in Lancaster County and was attended by local residents and business owners who enjoyed watching the men hit their targets. In 1907, gun companies opened up shop in downtown Lancaster to supply Target shooters all over the United States with new firearms and ammunition. In 1916,target shooters from all around America gathered at Plymouth Meeting to participate in what became known as "The Great American Rifle Shoot". This event saw rifle teams from across the country compete against each other in a shooting competition lasting dayslangs with prizes given out for top scores. In 1941,ammunition manufacturers moved their operations into downtown Lancaster when World War II began and quickly developed new products to meet Military needs such as incendiary rounds that could destroy enemy fortifications during war time bombardments. In 1814, General Cassius Clay bought some land from Colonel Robert Ewing for $868 per acre (about $). He formed Clay County from parts of Stark (west), Holmes (south), Muskingum (east), Clinton (north), Fairfield (southwest) and Medina counties in order to develop this new territory into farmland where horses could be raised instead of being killed for meat.
