He built a log cabin on the Scioto River near modern day Mentor. The first post office in Lancaster County was established in 1814 with John Dickinson as its first occupant. In 1827, commissioners decided to move the county seat from Mentor to Lancaster after residents there refused to allow either city growth within their boundaries. Lancaster had its peak population during World War I when it reached 15,000 people due to military recruitment by General Motors and other companies; however, this number decreased following the war as many servicemen returned home and America's economy slowed down. The population slumped again during Prohibition until 1929 when prohibition was repealed nationwide; this led to a resurgence in business activity and economic stability for Lancaster County until the late 1990s when alcohol became an issue once again among local citizens and politicians alike. In 2000, Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey won election to succeed then-President Clinton as U.S senator from Delaware; he served two terms (2001-2005) before running for re-election in 2006 against incumbent Tom Vilsack; Vilsack won easily but Casey continued to serve concurrently as U.S Senator through 2014 despite speculation that he may retire after his third term expired at year's end due to term limits set by Congress.; Casey announced his intention not run for re-election after2014 and chose instead to run for president in 2016 while also serving concurrently as U.S senator through 2020; he lost narrowly against Trump although he received nearly 3 million more votes than Trump did nationally.).
