It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH–KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lancaster was founded by George Washington in 1795 as a post office on the Scioto River. The first store in town opened on November 12, 1813, and by 1820 there were six stores and two hotels in town. In 1839, Lancaster became an incorporated village under state law; it had a total population of 584 people when it joined the township system in 1850. The township system was disbanded in 1800 and its residents were annexed into the borough of Middletown before becoming an independent municipality again with a total population of 24,521 as of 2000 Census data In 1907, Lancaster acquired rights to use water from Lake Erie for municipal purposes which led to its nickname "The Watertowns".
