On October 1, 1835 it changed its name to "Lancaster" when chartered by James Kappes as an incorporated village within Trumbull Township; however, Kappes sold it to George Stephenson two years later due to financial difficulties caused by construction contracts he had with Stephenson's locomotive builder George Stephenson & Sons Ltd.. The settlement failed to gain enough support so Stephenson offered it back to Kappes but renamed it "Lancaster" again when he took over control from Stephenson in 1840; Lancaster continued being called both places until 1889 when it reverted back to its original spelling (with an initial). In 1870–71 John Fenton developed Greenfield Patent No., which included much of what is now downtown Lancaster; Development began soon after because farmers could no longer get credit for planting corn or wheat because railroad companies were buildin
