Lancaster, Ohio is a city in southern Ohio, United States. The population was 16,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Scioto River and is part of the Cleveland–Wilmington, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lancaster was founded in 1795 by George Washington's brother-in-law General James Robertson as a military outpost on the Scioto River between present day downtown Cleveland and Wilkinsburg. The first settlers were Quakers from Pennsylvania who built their home in what is now Lancaster Center. In 1812, after American Indian chief Wyandotte had unsuccessfully tried to buy land from the British Empire for his people, General John Cuyahoga bought Wyandotte's lands east of Mill Creek and established Stark County as an Indian Reservation. On July 12, 1813, Lancaster became part of Frankfort Township when it was organized out of parts of six other townships that made up Stark County: Union (northwest), Elyria (southwest), Athens (southwest), Mentor (east), Geauga (northeast) and unincorporated portions of Butler and Mahoning counties. From this time forward Lancaster was known as "The City" or "TheTownship". In 1824, when Euclid Township formed from parts of neighboring Franklin Township with similar boundaries but different names – including Biglerville to its north – Lancaster became its own township again when all but one member chose not to become part of Euclid following a referendum held in May 1824. This streak continued until Cheviot Township formed from most of Franklin Township south of I-475 in 1998; then Cheviot took over all but two members' responsibilities within Lancaster while still retaining its name for itself throughout its entire history. In 1902 both Chesterfield Boroughs merged into Greater Chesterfield; however due to charter change by then Mayor William Howard Taft which moved responsibility for municipal government from Chesterfield Borough to Greater Chesterfield Borough without giving any indication how this would affect township status within the larger entity they remain separate municipalities today with their own mayors and councils even though they are federally consolidated under federal jurisdiction thanks to Taft’s successor mayor Barack Obama who abolished county government altogether within Greater Chesterfield despite public protestations from residents there about being treated like second class citizens just because they live close enough to Interstate 476 for shopping convenience purposes only! Finally effective October 1st 2015 all cities/townships within metropolitan Cleveland were merged into one statistical area code(2167) under new Mayor Anthony Miesha). Lancaster has experienced various waves since European settlement began here nearly 250 years ago: first came Methodists during the 1830s; then Baptists followed during 1840s; finally Amish arrived here during 1860s through 1870s before becoming extinct around 1900 due largely to prohibition laws passed by Ulysses S Grant’s administration & others policies that disrupted life hereabouts regardless religious affiliation although some Amish did return after prohibition ended & now maintain some community activities near town center such as playing music or going riding horses
