The history of ammunition in Lancaster, Ohio can be traced back to 1812 when a company called The Lancaster Rifle and Pistol Company was founded. This company manufactured firearms and ammunition for the U.S. Cavalry and militia. In 1827, The Lancaster Rifle and Pistol Company merged with another company, the Ligonier Rifle and Pistol Company, to form The Lancaster Rifle and Pistol Factory. This factory produced rifles and pistols for the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). In 1865, The Lancaster Rifle & Pistol Factory became part of The National Firearms Manufacturing Corporation. This corporation made firearms for both law enforcement officers and military personnel. At this time, The National Firearms Manufacturing Corporation also produced Ammunition Division products such as Bearcat rounds (a type of high velocity rifle round) and M1 Garand rounds (a type of carbine round). From 1978 until 1986, The National Firearms Manufacturing Corporation was renamed Colt Industries Incorporated. As part of this change in ownership, Colt Industries Incorporated merged with IMI Holdings Limited to form ArmaLite Arms Corp., which continued producing Ammunition Division products under its own name until 2012 when it was sold to General Dynamics Land Systems LLC for $8 billion. Since 1906, ArmaLite Arms Corp.'s Ammunition Division has been responsible for manufacturing over 4 million rounds of ammunition per day at two locations in Lebanon Township—the original ArmaLite Armoury site on High Street in what is now the community of Easton Village adjacent to West Liberty Elementary School; as well as an ammo plant located adjacent to Parkland High School in Parkland Township beginning in 1957; both plants were closed down by General Dynamics Land Systems LLC during their acquisition of ArmaLite Arms Corp.)
