Lakewood, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Lucas County. The population was 98,517 at the 2010 census, making it the 11th largest city in Ohio and its second-largest city after Cleveland. Upon their arrival they discovered that there were already villages present within this location including Licklider's Mills (now known as University Heights), which they renamed Lakewood because of this association with Philadelphia; and West Side, which they named East Side because of its location oneast side of downtown where only public houses could be found at that time (!). The first post office opened in 1893 under the name Harmonstown and continued operations until 1907. The first telephone service arrived here in 1912 with Western Electric Corporation providing service from an old switchboard on Main Street near today's Gadsden Square Shopping Center across from City Hall (then called First National Bank Building). The first skyscraper here was erected by Oakland Steel Company boss John Roebling between 1915-1916 as Tower 2 (later renamed Rockwell Tower) with 216 ft tall spire reaching into central Cleveland! This tower helped start what would become one of America’s most vibrant commercial districts – later nicknamed “the center of commerce” – during World War I when aluminum production soared due to wartime demand for airplanes made out of metal such as aluminum wings and fuselages! After World War II ended, business slowed down as people focused on new technological advancements such as television, automobiles etc., but has since picked up again with various new businesses being born such as Sam’s Club (2005), Nationwide Arena (2007), Euclid Quicken Loans Arena (2008) etc.; many thanks to recent annexation into more populous areas including Strongsville/ Mentor/ Bolton Landing!!! . Lakewood is a community in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Lakewood was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. In 1821, John Clements bought land in what is now the town of Latrobe, which he named after himself and his friend and fellow settler James Latrobe. Other early settlers included Andrew Carnegie and his brother-in-law George Westphal. By 1830, there were 12 houses in what is now Lakewood; it had a population of only 100 people. In 1836, when Ohio became a state, Lakewood was given to Hamilton County as part of its western territory. From then until 1877, it was known as "Latrobe Township". The township's name changed again in 1907 to "Lakewood Township", after Cleveland's newly organized city government renamed all of its cities and townships within Cleveland's boundaries for convenience. The first post office in Lakewood opened on May 3, 1837; it was called "Latrobe". The first store on Main Street opened on November 11 that same year. The first telephone line arrived in Lakeshore Township on March 1, 1849; it was called the "Latrobe Telephone Company". On April 15th 1870 residents of neighboring Latrobe Township voted to secede from their township because they felt they had not been treated fairly by their Hamilton County counterparts while they were under county jurisdiction; this referendum failed by a margin of 9 to 5%. On December 7th 1870 the last post office closed with 2 remaining inhabitants serving as mail carriers - one being Mrs John Wightman (1834-1910). Afterward citizens built their own homes without permits or assistance from either government entities; this independence has continued through today despite efforts by both local governments and commercial interests to change or control this behavior through zoning ordinances etc.. upon reopening on July 1st 1913 two new residents moved into town - Wm Haggerty (1860-1935), an employee at General Motors who started out working at his father’s machine shop before moving into manufacturing himself eventually becoming president of GM fame (and owner/operator/chief engineer for many brands including Pontiac) and Florence “ Flo” Snyder (1896-1986), daughter of wealthy farmer Jens Snyder who purchased land eastside of town along Ulysses Road starting out as maidservant before becoming one of America’s most successful women entrepreneurs founding her own business importing clothing items from Europe ultimately making her fortune exporting products worldwide including establishing herself as an international figurehead for American industry
Lakewood was originally a small creek that drained into the Scioto River. In 1837, the area around present-day Lakewood was platted and named for its location on the eastern edge of what is now Pittsburgh. The town grew rapidly in the early 1800s as Methodists, Baptists, and other religious groups settled in the area. By 1830, Lakewood had a population of about 150 people. In 1847, when Ohio became a state, Lakewood became part of it. The town experienced rapid growth during the 1850s and 1860s due to its role as an important transportation hub for goods arriving from all over Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1865, however, a major fire burned through much of downtown and destroyed most of the structures in what is now known as "the district." The fire also destroyed many of the town's businesses and left it with very little financial stability after that event. The town slowly began to rebound during Reconstruction Era times beginning in 1870. However, again economic challenges plagued it during this time period; particularly because much manufacturing had been moved away from Pittsburgh during World War II. In 1951, however, Lakewood became part of the newly formed Cleveland metropolitan area after being reorganized within Greater Cleveland under federal jurisdiction following United States v. Seidel case. There has been significant growth since then attributable to suburbanization in Northeast Ohio along with increased investment by private companies in both housing development and local commercial activity throughout the city limits
