Lakewood is a small city in the northwestern part of Ohio, on the Scioto River. It was first settled by English colonists in 1795 and became a town in 1812. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. Lakewood's history began with early European settlers who came to the area during the colonial era. In 1795, Captain John Kirkland founded Kirkland Station on the Scioto River, about twelve miles northwest of today's Lakewood. He named his station for his father-in-law, Colonel George Washington Kirkland. The settlement grew rapidly and by 1800 there were over 100 residents living at Kirkland Station. By 1812, however, it had declined due to difficulties such as lack of water and transportation opportunities. In that year, Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of townships within present-day Ohio; one for Lakewood was approved on February 9th, 1813 and became effective upon its filing with the county recorder on March 12th. In 1814–15 a survey was made of some areas east of Cleveland (now part of Akron) which would become later known as Lucas County; much land within present-day Lakewood was included in this survey including what is now downtown or Old Town Square On December 5th, 1828 James Kapp established Kapp’s Landing on the Scioto River near where it joins the river just upstream from today’s City Hall building This landing served as a stopping point for travelers going upriver to Portage Point and points beyond during those days before boats could navigate along both banks of the river
In 1792, the Township of Lakewood was created. It consisted of land that now makes up the city of Cleveland. The township was named after the body of water that surrounded it and its namesake, Lakewood Hill. In 1801, a post office was established in the township and remained in operation until 1837. It is interesting to note that this same year saw the first organized Baptist congregation in Ohio when Reverend John Hodge founded a church in what is now downtown Cleveland.
