Lakewood is a city in Defiance County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county's second most populous city and the fifth-most populous municipality in Defiance County. The post office that serves Lakewood was established in 1816. Lakewood rests on a limestone plateau surrounded by rolling hills and forested valleys. It has a temperate climate with cold winters and hot summers, similar to Greater Cleveland and other Midwestern cities. The first people to settle here were farmers who arrived during the early 19th century from Pennsylvania, New York, and Maine. They built log homes on bluffs overlooking the now empty Muskingum River. By 1860, some of these pioneers had brought their families here to live while they built new homes elsewhere in Defiance County. In 1892, when Defiance County became part of Ohio Territory, there were only three settlements: East Liverpool (now Mentor), Westlake Heights (now Middleburg Heights), and Northfield (now Northville). All but one of these were abandoned within 10 years because of lack of water or other reasons. However, by 1912 there were 11 villages in Defiance County: Appleton (later Wheeling), Batavia (now Arlington Heights), Bedford Junction (later South Lima), Blackford Junction (later Beavercreek], Bucyrus Junction (later Cardington]), Dryden Junction ( later Delaware City), Geneva Junction (later Greenburgh), Hudson Heights Village( later Hillsboro Heights ), Jefferson Township , Knox Township . In 1916 all but two of these villages had populations over 1,000 residents; only Blackford Junction survived until 1920 without ever reaching 2200 residents living together as a village again

Lakewood is an agricultural community in the U.S. state of Ohio, located about 14 miles southeast of Cleveland on I-71. The population was 10,839 at the 2010 census. Its name comes from a local stream, Lakewood Creek. In 1814, George Washington Carver and his brother James founded Carver & Sons grocery store in what is now the town of Lakewood. In 1831, John Dennison established a sawmill and gristmill in what is now the town of Northfield; these mills were soon joined by others and became the nucleus of present-day Lakewood. It was not until after the American Civil War that industrialization began to take hold in this area with construction of homes for workers by local farmers and businessmen. The first factory built in Lakewood was that operated by Wm Higginson at 5200 Main Street between 1870 and 1872; it manufactured shoes for tanneries throughout central Ohio. The peak years for agriculture were during World War II when demand for food products led to increased production in those industries as well as other trades within the community such as carpentry, papermaking, blacksmithing, truck driving services and more; however by 1960 only 6 percent of jobs still existed within agriculture while over 50 percent had transitioned into modern industry or service sectors such as technology or health care. Many residents have left their rural roots for suburban living which has drawn many young people lured away by opportunities to work in larger cities but also retain some small farmer/ ranchers traditions which continue today despite challenges posed by global warming (see below). During 2016-2017 there was great interest shown towards developing a new park near downtown called “Lakewood Green” with hopes to attractMillenials who often prefer urban areas with greater biking opportunities along with public open space near transit stops making it easy access to jobsites without having too much traffic outside your doorstep (See map attached). This would be great addition if done right as downtown business owners could see benefits aside from tourists bringing money into town but less pollution accompanying them causing same amount tax revenue gained elsewhere!
Lakewood was founded by the Chippewa Indians in 1792. In 1814, it became a part of the United States and was laid out as a town. By 1870, it had reached its present size. The city of Cleveland was founded in1896 and Lakewood became an integral part of that city.
