As a result of this directive, numerous handgun companies began manufacturing firearms specifically designed for military use such as Heckler & Koch G3A1 carbines and Walther PPK pistols. Lakewood is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Akron-Canton-Summit, OH Combined Statistical Area.[1] The first permanent settler in Lakewood was John Tewksbury in 1788. By 1800, there were over 100 people living in Lakewood and it had a post office that year. In 1803, a mill was built on the Scioto River by Nicholas Brown and it became one of the leading mills in central Ohio. The town's name came from an incident where local farmers took issue with someone named "Lakwod" being given water rights near their farmsteads. They renamed their settlement "Lakewood" after finding a tree with this same name growing nearby. In 1825, Cleveland Register reported that "a number of citizens have lately erected handsome residences within our limits".[2] In 1857, when Lakewood voted to become a city,[3] it had a population of 1,500 residents and was divided into three wards: North (west of downtown), South (south side of main street), and East (east side). On July 1st 1870 when Cleveland annexed neighbouring townships including Summit and Allentown[4], all but two blocks east of Main Street became part of what would eventually become known as Downtown Cleveland.[5][6][7][8] On October 15th 1870 Mayor James Buchanan announced plans for construction of what would be called Tower Park across Fromom Road from City Hall which would include an outdoor swimming pool; gymnasium; Playhouse; shops; banks; movie theaters; restaurants; as well as new housing developments for professionals called Park Row.[9][10] When completed it would have been Detroit-style skyscrapers reaching up to 350 feet (100 meters) tall[11]. It never came to fruition due to financial difficulties however Tower Park can still be seen today at 1509 Euclid Avenue across from Quicken Loans Arena Complex on the west side of downtown[12]. During World War II many businesses closed down because they could not compete with wartime prices or demand for materials such as munitions needed by America's allies such as Great Britain and Canada[13]. Businesses reopened once hostilities ended but many residents lost their jobs since so much production stopped during wartime while others found new sources for employment during peacetime. This did not mean that everyday life returned to normal however some aspects did improve like more families now had access to indoor plumbing which previously onlytained to poorer areas[14]. Also during this time period small businesses got back ontothe map thanks to entrepreneurship programs instigated by mayor Buchanan along with venture capitalists such as Ezra Taft Benson who started First National Bank & Trust Company[15][16]. Manylakewoodians also contributed their skills or services towards war efforts such as working at military camps or hospitals etc., making America more secure while also helping contribute $3 million dollars towards national defense through The United States War Relief Administration).[17][18] After World War II many resources flowed back into Lakewood thanks to increased suburban development around it However economic conditions have since deteriorated again with high unemployment rates even though population numbers are slowly trending upwards
