Lakewood is a city in the northwestern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 36,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Lakewood were Dutch and English traders in 1614 who named it "Hemerton". The village was platted in 1795 by General John Grant as part of the township of Lakewood and village of North Union. In 1827, a post office called Hemerton was established on the east shore of Amherstburg River, north of present-day Westlake Village. The name for the town's namesake river (now known as Muskingum) was also chosen by General Grant: "Hemerton" means "the stream that comes down from high ground." In 1886, a railroad line extended from Akron to Canton and Northern Indiana via Cleveland; its tracks crossed the Little Miami River just south of downtown Hemerton. A station called "Hemerton", located across Mill Creek from what is now Mercy Hospital, served passengers until 1907 when service was transferred to Summit Station on the now defunctAkron-Canton Railroad. In 1927 when Akron-Canton became self-governing, two new villages were created within Lakewood Township: Springfield Township on its east side annexed by Lakewood while South Euclid Township on its west side annexed by Akron proper. For many years after annexation these two villages shared only a single name -Springfield Township - but in 1990 they each received their own municipal charter which designated them as separate municipalities with their own governing bodies and budgets. On July 1st 2000 Springfield Township merged into Lakewood along with North Euclid Township creating an even more diverse municipality with over 30 different services available at its 5 boroughs jurisdictional boundaries! Lakewood has experienced rapid growth in recent decades due to both job opportunities and population growth within Greater Cleveland County overall; however there are still pockets throughout the city where poverty remains high or where traditional neighborhood values still hold sway.$5 million has been earmarked for community development initiatives such as affordable housing assistance/marketing and cultural events through 2020 so that all citizens have access to quality living opportunities regardless economic status

Lakewood, Ohio is a town located in the Greater Cleveland area of Ohio. The population was 35,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lakewood was founded in 1827 by Christopher Columbus as an agricultural village on the outlet of Little Miami River. It became a city in 1907 and has since grown into one of North America's most ethnically diverse and cosmopolitan cities. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Lakewood in 1827. They were farmers who came to purchase land from the Native Americans that had been living there for centuries. The village grew quickly because it was situated on the outlet of Little Miami River, which acted as a natural stopover for goods travelling between Cleveland and Buffalo Bayou near Fort Wayne, Indiana. By 1830, when Christopher Columbus established Lakewood as an agricultural village, it consisted only of twenty homes and five families。 In 1835, Columbus purchased land east of his original village site and began to build a permanent home that would become known as "Columbus House." Over time, other residents joined Columbus in developing this new community including Abram Hewitt (1837-1911), Samuel Morse (1840-1937), Augustus Fritsch (1846-1920), John Atherton (1857-1938), Lucius Bowen (1859-1939) and Edward Hockley (1861-1945). The city's growth continued throughout the 19th century with various improvements such as annexation of neighboring townships; establishment of streetcars; construction of schools; and development of industry including energy production facilities such as a foundry and auto plants along with more public housing developments like Regency Village during this time period Indianapolis also experienced rapid growth during this time period However World War I halted these trends although some industrial activity resumed following hostilities In 1925 however race riots occurred within Lakewood after black youths were caught stealing cigars from white merchants
Lakewood was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and is the oldest community in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The City of Lakewood was incorporated on July 1, 1894. In 1951, Lakewood annexed part of the city of Avon. On November 3, 1998, the City of Ironton annexed parts of the city of Cleveland as well.
