Lakewood, Ohio is a city located in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 27,879 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Hamilton County after Cleveland and Greater Cincinnati. The city is home to the Lakewood Gun Club and National Rifle Association headquarters. Ohio's history with firearms can be traced back to 1792 when General George Washington was forced from his home in western Pennsylvania by Patriot militias under Colonel Nathanael Greene. Washington journeyed through Erie and Niagara counties on his way to Yorktown before finally concluding his odyssey at Fort Pitt near Pittsburgh. At the time of Washington's arrival, handguns were not common among the indigenous peoples of this area and had been limited only to European settlers. In 1802, Captain John Ross discovered what would become known as the Great Lakes region while exploring for fur traders in what is now Michigan Territory. Upon arriving at Sault Ste Marie he noted that there were multiple land masses spanning more than 100 miles (160 km). He named one of these mountains "The Hill" because it seemed like a powerful fortress against any who might try to approach it from the interior. This led him to believe that such a fort could be defended by gunpowder stored within its walls rather than troops or cannonade alone. Captain Ross' discovery convinced early American colonists that guns could protect them from Indian attacks on their settlements along the Mississippian River valley, opening up new opportunities for trade with both Indigenous nations and Spanish forces living along the frontier between North America and Mexico City – an area which later became known as Texas de Tejas (Mexico). In 1795 Major James Wilkinson built an artillery battery consisting of fifteen cannons on high ground overlooking Ottawa Township east of present-day Cleveland; Wilkinson called this position Fort George Wright due to its resemblance to George Washington's Mount Vernon estate during President George Washington's stay in Philadelphia during stagecoach travel across central Pennsylvania in 1794-5 vacationing around Middle Tennessee during his Visit Among His constituents - part of Your Excellency's itinerary as governor general... Wilkinson also ordered two long red sandbags filled with powder and shot put down upon each side of Old Fort Wright opposite King's Chapel just inside Ottawa Township line about two rods distant from where we sit today... Lakewood is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 27,657 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Cuyahoga County and part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lakewood were French traders and explorers in 1692. They named it "Chrysolite" because of the high amount of Chrysolite quarries near the then-settlement. Another early name for Lakewood was "Wickliffe". In 1814, General George Washington's army invaded Canada and passed through northern Ohio on their way south. A small group of American settlers came to Lakewood from Wickliffe Township as part of that invasion. The new arrivals called themselves the "Green Berets", after Major General Nathanael Greene's brigade which fought at Yorktown in 1781. In 1838, President James K. Polk extended an invitation to Governor John Fenton to move Ohio's capital from Newark (now Delaware) to Cleveland so that Cleveland could become less dependent on Pennsylvania politics and more important within America itself as a center for commerce and industry. Fenton accepted and prepared to move his office when he learned about a land offer from self-made millionaire Augustus Kelley who lived in Sharon Township just east of Cleveland on Muskegon Heights Boulevard today known as Euclid Avenue North (the old name for Muskegon Heights Boulevard). When construction began on downtown Cleveland's $40 million City Hall in 1839, Kelley donated 5 acres (2 hectares) adjacent to his home at 6121 Euclid Avenue North as city parkland until park boundaries were redefined in 1920 by Mayor John Husted.. In 1840, when similar offers were made by other mayors during Peoria's mayoral term – including David Daley – he declined because his wife Julia wanted him to stay put; however Daley did give away another parcel of land two years later when he took over as mayor.. Lakewood became an incorporated town on March 14, 1851 with a population of twenty-four people: twelve men and fourteen women living single or apart from male partners; six children under eighteen years old living with parents or grandparents; four widows or widowers aged sixty-five or older who had lost husbands or fathers earlier that year; one man belonging to a Masonic Lodge; all citizens voting in Town Meeting held May 3rd & 4th following year under Kingdon Wills'. On December 15th 1861 incorporation proceedings were abandoned because there was no quorum present due mainly due to lack of suitable property owners….. By 1870 there were 503 residents with 112 businesses……………………………………….By 1880 only 176 residents remained……………………………………….On February 14th 1890 no business ever reopened after fire destroyed building 1&2 next door………………………………………..On November 20th 1896 arsonist set synagogues & library buildings on fire………………………………….The last resident left Lakewood April 25th 1897

Lakewood was founded in 1796 by John Cleveland. It became an important settlement for the region due to its location at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River and its access to natural resources.
