The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1795. They started trading with the Native American nations and built several small villages before settling on a farm about two miles east of present-day Lakewood along the Anacostia River. The first settler was Pierre André La Salle who founded the city of La Salle on July 4, 1814 as a fur trader's post near present-day Cleveland. In 1824, George Stephenson built his locomotive engine into a working model at nearby Sandusky and brought it back to Cleveland for exhibition. When Stephenson announced he had created an electric rail line connecting Cleveland and Buffalo (now Buffalo), many local capitalists offered financial support to build it. The Erie Canal ran through this region and increased trade between Cleveland and Buffalo so that Stephenson's railroad became profitable enough to enter into full public ownership in 1834. In 1836, James Kenedy bought interest in Stephenson's railroad from its original investors including Steuart Mifflin and others formed the Kenedy Railroad Company which constructed additional lines across central Ohio until 1870 when it merged with other companies forming the Pennsylvania Railroad which grew rapidly into one of America's largest companies during the 19th century When World War I began in 1914 lakewood residents went to work starting up their factories in nearby Lorain while their brethren around Akron took care of home defense needs primarily arms production although some manufacturing did take place at Alliance Furniture Works located south of town near Northfield where much later Rubbermaid would be founded After World War II most manufacturing stopped except for some light farming such as rubber products but heavy industry continued until 1978 when Cuyahoga County voters passed an ordinance banning all new industrial development within its borders especially within 5 miles of any urban center making Lakewood one of only a few towns nationwide still without an incorporated government

The town was originally called "Cayuga". In 1814, it was renamed "Lakewood Heights" after John D. Rockefeller's estate in fee simple. By 1825, the town had reached its present size and name. It declined during the 19th century due to many factors including increased population growth in nearby Cleveland, Ohio; lack of good water supplies; and manufacturing activity at nearby Lorain County towns such as Ashtabula and Youngstown. However, fortunes changed in the early 20th century when oil began to be discovered in Ohio and industry grew around it. As a result, Lakewood emerged as one of Cleveland's most important neighborhoods during this time period.
