Lakewood, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Medina County. The population was 381,503 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Medina County by population. The name Lakewood was derived from "Lakota" which means "place where beavers multiplying build dams." In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's cavalry discovered and destroyed an Indian encampment on what is now Erie Boulevard and High Street in what is today Elmhurst Township; this event has been called the Battle of Beaver Dam Creek. General Wayne named his unit "The Lakewood Rangers" in memory of this accomplishment. After General Wayne's death in 1794, his general staff recommended that he be buried near Canton due to his many military successes there during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). In 1814, when General Wayne's body was brought back to America for burial, he was interred at Greenville Cemetery west of Toledo. The location on Beaver Dam Creek became known as Arlington Heights because many wealthy American citizens located their homes on high ground around Beaverdam Creek to avoid being waterlogged during wet seasons. When Detroit stockholders met to discuss forming a new city government for Detroit on December 12th 1835 they decided that it would make more sense to form a smaller town just east of downtown Detroit with only 7500 residents while they developed downtown. On January 1st 1836 newly appointed Mayor James Finch proposed creating a small town called Lakewood within 3 miles (5 kilometers) east of downtownDetroit along White Road between Gratiot Avenue & Canfield Road for 6000 residents with all township services within walking distance including schoolhouse & post office(s). This idea failed but was resurrected again on October 14th 1840 when Newburgh Township trustees voted unanimously to create a new township called Medina due to increasing population density around downtownDetroit(& included some land adjacent to present day Westlake Village). On November 10th 1840 President John Quincy Adams signed legislation establishing Medina County with its current borders which provided for a new township called Euclid within 4square miles (10 square kilometers) south east of Cleveland proper including any land adjacent thereto lying north or southwesterly thereof having an average elevation over 500 feet (& limited development rights): these boundaries were later changed by Act No 9 Of 1850 (3rd District), adding White Chapel Township which includes most parts now located within our limits

Lakewood is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 27,803 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Lakewood was Uriah Woodruff in 1795. He and his family made their home on an island in the body of Muskegon Creek near present-day Uniontown Heights. In 1814, John Ziegler platted what became town on land he purchased from Uriah Woodruff and others around that time. Ziegler named it Lakewood after his childhood home near Philadelphia where he had been born in 1786 to German immigrants Johann Georg Ziegler and Elisabeth Kappeler (née Hahn). In 1836, whenCLEVELAND COUNTY was created from parts of Cuyahoga, Medina and Stark Counties, lakewood became its county seat because it had more people than any other community within CLEVELAND COUNTY.[2] James Ackerly served as Lakewood's first mayor from 1836 until 1840 when he resigned due to illness before taking office. The town charter was granted on April 15th, 1858 by the then Township President George Sibley[3] after much debate between residents about granting such a charter because there were no streets or buildings within walking distance of many homes[4]. The cornerstone for what would become "the most significant civic building in town" was laid on December 6th, 1860 by Second Mayor David Manners with funds raised by public subscription[5]. One result of this early civic activity was that some streets were built such as Euclid Avenue which runs through downtown today,[6] while others like Clinton Street remain unnamed to this day (note: Clinton Street has since been renamed Broad Ripple Boulevard). The first post office opened at 516 Elmira Road on November 12th 1860.[7][8][9][10] That same year saw construction begin on First Baptist Church which stands today across from Central High School along Elmira Road; it would be completed two years later in 1862.[11][12][13][14] As township president Grosse Pointe Farms edged closer to becoming an incorporated municipality,[15], village status remained vacant for a number of years until finally being approved by voters in 1896[16]; however incorporation did not occur until 1899 despite protests from local leaders over lack of support from government officials.[17]. During World War I serving as captain with Company D 36th Infantry Regiment MC during trench warfare at Chaumont Farm; 1st Lt., George Ewing captured one enemy soldier who narrated events details included here:[18]. After the war ended service transferred back to Cleveland where George Ewing resumed law practice but died suddenly leaving ownership & assets up for grabs several months later leading to protracted legal battle between his widow Elisabeth (nee Ziegler) & 3rd Ward Alderman tavern owner Lazarus Macekovich over control over business affairs culminating with settlement reached under terms negotiated between both parties cashing out $1 million plus interest into Macekovich’s trust account –later known as Macekovich Bank –and elisabeth receiving $500 per month rent checks instead . Today’s Elmira Road property line falls just south of where she stood upon her death resulting In 2013 a legal challenge brought forth by her children against former Trustee Lazarus Macekovich claiming they are rightful heirs apparent based upon evidence seized duringlegal seizure).[19][20] [21](Note: Elisabeth's death did not stop her son Lazarus' efforts to gain control over portions OF her estate including via eminent domain.) By 1920 Lakeshore had developed into one large housing development containing many single family residences facing onto open fields filled with corn seed storage barns currently used as parking lots for nearby businesses)[22]. From 1917 through 1924 First Methodist Episcopal Church located at 375 Winton Rd operated out side town Limits - services continued inside Municipal Building thru membership transfer du jour unto newly organized congregation led by Revd.(now Pastor) Aloysius Weinreb who resided (& officiated at services therein)PIKEVILLE SKYLINE CHURCH next door; services were conducted inside Municipal Building thru mail order process till disbanded following fire incident requiring relocation outdoors c 1924 . Although abandoned during Prohibition era indoor plumbing not available so worshipers resortedTo using portable restrooms outdoors - latterly known as “Walking Water Wells”& regularly attended BY THE PARKERS [23]( Note: Reverend Aloysius Weinreb also constructed new church building adjacent thereto now occupied by Summit United Methodist Church .) On July 9th 1925 only 2 days prior to opening ceremony REVDREDGED FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH TO LAKEWOOD AFTER MUCH PRESSURE FROM MAYOR JAMES Ackerly WHO CLAIMED HE FELT LIKE WEINREB WAS UNLIKELY TO OPEN UP AGAIN IN A RUSH [24]). This event represented perhaps FINAL STEP IN DEMOCRACY FORMING AS NEW GOVERNMENT ALLOWED CHURCH SOONER OR Later SEEKING AUTHORITY FROM LOCAL OFFICIALS Religious affiliation NOT MEANT TO INDICATE POLITICAL leanings .) By 1930 establishment claimed 507 members comprising 25% women & 60% Negroes although membership figure declined somewhat subsequent yr.; remainingmembers constituted mostly white collar workersreligion unaffiliated . Of note throughout late 19C few if any local newspapers served city limits although numerous notices/ads appearedIn addition voluminous amountsof fraternal/social clubs existedprimarily children- oriented
