Lakewood is a city in Athens, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,965 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Franklin County. The name Lakewood comes from the Miami and Erie Canal which ran through the town. The first settler in Lakewood was John Witherspoon who platted what is now known as Main Street in 1792. Many other early residents came to Lakewood because it was a stop on stagecoaches traveling between Cincinnati and Cleveland. In 1814, when Ohio became an independent state, Lakewood became its second county seat after Lucasville. In 1828, land around present-day Main Street and State Road 12 were donated by J P Morgan for use as a township cemetery. For many years there were no schools within the township limits; however, about 1860 Drury High School opened in what is now downtown and continues to serve today as one of the largest high school districts in Ohio. In 1871–72 three men named George Washington Hubbard laid out a townsite near downtown that would become part of present-day Akron - Hubbard Townsite (#5). They named their settlement after General Washington (1754–1837), who had helped lead American forces during the Revolutionary War and later served as president of the United States (1797–1800). The first post office opened in Hubbard Townsite on November 15, 1871; it was destroyed by fire two weeks later but reestablished on December 1 according to patent records at #112325. There has been no recent change to this address since then In 1901 both main streets in Lakewood were widened with new sidewalks just west of Center Mall into what are now Broad Ripple Boulevard and Springbrook Drive NW; this also created what are now five blocks north of downtown along First Avenue between Euclid Avenue NW and Park Row SE On October 16th 1890 Wm Hargrave started drivein sales from his garage at 216 S Main St until he built his own stand across from Ives department store at 322 N Clinton Ave
