Many old buildings have been preserved including The Mercantile which now functions as a museum and restaurant; the post office; and two hotels: The Summit House Inn & Suites on Lincoln Road and Regency Garden Lodge on Woodruff Road near I-71 Exit 117B

Lakewood was founded on the Scioto River in 1796 by General George Washington and his army. The town became a resort for soldiers and their families during the War of 1812. It was also a center of manufacturing during the late 19th century. In 1937, Lakewood merged with neighboring Defiance to form Defiance-Lakewood.
