In 1927, Kettering incorporated as a village. That year saw major changes in its economy when Standard Oil Company built an oil refinery on the south side of town – initially using parts of Kettering's mills as production sites. The refinery caused significant economic decline for the town over time, but it remains one of its most popular tourist destinations today. Today, kettering is considered part of downtown Dayton because much of its infrastructure was built there during those years – including several shopping malls and two hospitals (one belonging to Wayne State University). Additionally, many professional institutions (including Wright State University) are located within walking distance of both downtown andkettering's primary shopping district.

Kettering is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 5,973 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from a Native American word meaning "to trade." Kettering was first settled by settlers in 1796 and was named for Nicholas Kettering, an early settler. The first European to visit what is now Kettering was James Kieft in 1796 when he explored the area as part of his exploration of the Northwest Territory. He named it “Kettering” after Nicholas Kettering, one of his followers who accompanied him on this trip. In 1801, John Cranch visited the area and gave it its present name of Kettering after taking over land from Nicholas's widow Elizabeth Cranch at that time. In 1833, Nathan Bedford Forrest mapmakers created a new map of Ohio which showed the townships around Scioto River valley east and west of Dayton being included in what would become Kettering Township because they were claimed by both those settlements respectively - Dayton to the north and kettering to the south (the township boundaries have since been altered). At that time there were only a few small villages scattered throughout central Ohio including Newark and Wooster (later part of Cincinnati) but these had all grown up around canal trades between larger river towns downstream (Marietta/Middletown), so no real development took place until later when roads were built through these communities linking them together On July 15th 1870 developers Ephraim Gifford & associates with others formed The Dayton-Decatur Railroad Company with three goals: 1) To open up new markets for goods being shipped downriver from Great Lakes ports such as Cleveland; 2) To provide transportation for farmers across central Ohio; 3) To create jobs for men employed on construction projects such as damming rivers or building bridges The railroad soon became very successful becoming one of America's most important transportation corridors preuding World War I when troops arrived in large numbers via railroads bringing goods and equipment into hundreds of military camps across western Pennsylvania and southern Michigan After World War I ended various businesses within The Dayton-Decatur Railroad Company went bankrupt including some key leaders including president Samuel Morse who resides in Dayton still today considered one Of America’s pioneers In Radio Broadcasting
