Kettering is a town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. Kettering is part of the Akron–Canton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Kettering Township was Nicholas Nickle in 1790. The settlement was named for Captain George Kettering of the British Army who had fought in the French and Indian War and on the Great Lakes. In 1802, John Prentice built a gristmill on the Scioto River near present-day Main Street and State Road 203. In 1809, James Green bought land from Nicholas Nickle for $1,000. He built a frame house on Elm Street which still stands today as Green's House Museum. By 1812, kettering had two stores and one schoolhouse with an enrollment of 30 students. From this small beginning came kettering's growth as a village until it became an incorporated community in 1824 with three stores and 12 residents. In 1830, Anthony Brown founded Brownstown Mill on the west side of town across from where Union Mills now stand; that mill produced flour into the early 21st century . In 1838-39 local farmers formed a marketing association to promote crops sales throughout their area which led to developing commercial agriculture around Kettering for local distribution .
