The first permanent settler in what is now Kettering was Nicholas Dixon who arrived in 1796 from Virginia Township near Philadelphia as part of the Treaty of Paris after the French and Indian War. In 1802, he sold his land to John Wilkinson who named it "Kettering". He built a log cabin on a knoll overlooking the Scioto River where he lived until his death in 1827.
