The Village of Kettering was laid out on November 3, 1817, by John Herschel and Samuel Colt who had come to America from Great Britain that year with their father's company of gunmakers, Colt & Sons Ltd.. The original name "Kettering" was suggested by George Washington as a way to avoid confusion with nearby Middletown which had been established as an important trading post under British control (the area now known as Delaware County). The first settler named "Kettering" was Jonathan Dennison who arrived about 1798 from England via Philadelphia but failed to establish himself due to rough treatment from local Indians The Palmyra Mills were started around 1800 by Nicholas Biddle who operated them until his death in 1876 In 1830 there were two mills: one run by Andrew Ctermicki and one run by Levi Coffin In 1840 Joshua Goodrich opened a cooper shop In 1850 three families founded the village: Landon, McCoy and Duffield By 1860 there were 10 families living in the Village including 5 farmers and 5 slaves By 1870 there were 20 families living in the Village including 8 farmers and 6 slaves By 1880 there were 30 families living in the Village including 10 farmers and 10 slaves In 1890 only 4 families lived within ketting limits while 24 others lived outside it
