Kettering, Ohio is one of the most important cities in the United States. It is a town located in central Ohio on the Scioto River. The population was 9,635 at the 2010 census. Kettering is home to three colleges: Kettering-Warren College, Kent State University, and Western Reserve University. It also has a large airport which serves as a stop for flights to many different cities in the Midwest and Northeast. The city was founded by brothers John and Jonathan Dayton in 1803 as part of what would become Upper Township (now Kettering). In 1825, John Dayton donated land for a public school and courthouse. The first known settler in what now constitutes Kettering was George Haldeman from New York City who arrived in 1792. Over time, other settlers followed suit with lumbering and farming bringing new life to this small community. By 1800, there were 10 homes in Kettering. In 1810, John Dayton donated land for an agricultural college called The Greenbelt School which would become Kent State University (later renamed Western Reserve University). In 1824, he donated land for a new courthouse which would house both the municipal court and sheriff’s office; both structures still stand today. In 1830-31, John Dayton donated land for what is now the city limits; this parcel remains an important part of downtown kettering today. In 1840-41%, painters George Catlin and Jacob Lawrence moved from Cincinnati toketting to work on their paintings at The Greenbelt School; it was here that Catlin met his future wife Priscilla Eaton (née Stroud) split her time between classwork at GSB & painting lessons from Lawrence while they waited upon news of his father's death back home in Cincinnati on February 26th 1840 per family tradition (#4)]. Lawrence later became US congressman from Ohio’s 1st congressional district from 1865-1901 & First Lady of US during World War I #7). In 1850-51%, several farmers petitioned Congress for permission to settle around Lima Notch on their properties within present dayJefferson County because they believed that such an area could be used as an experimental farmstead devoted to agriculture research while being away from heavy manufacturing centers like Manchester or Toledo due to bad air quality (& high prices paid by landowners #8)). On November 6th 1850 under President James K Polk Washington granted permits “for upwards of 100 families … To establish themselves without any change whatever either in their mode or character of living…to inhabit Lots hereafter patented…tocultivate Farms not exceeding One hundred acres….To erect Buildings not exceedin Ten feet wide x Eighteen feet deep including gables…and two stories….and provide For Their Families A House And Gardenplot Of Land Free From any Tax”(9)). This experiment proved so successful that over 1400 families applied for permits through May 1861 but only 7 were given approval; these sevenfamilies became known as “The Founders”(10). After much discussion among members of Congress it was decided that Coles County should be created instead with allocating 3/5ths of its area (~$27 million dollars) towards rural development instead(11); however when Coles County formed it had less access than neighboring counties so much industrial growth took place there rather then near villages like Kettering where more people lived& grew food etc.(12).
Kettering, Ohio was founded in 1796 by Quaker George Washington. The town was named after Colonel James Kettering and his wife, Esther. The first post office in the town was established in 1800. In 1807, the town became a county seat of Cuyahoga County. Kettering had a population of 12,000 people by 1820. In 1825, the township of Kettering merged with the township of Canton to form the new city of Kettering. The population of the city increased to 50,000 by 1830 and 100,000 by 1840. The city was destroyed in a fire on November 30, 1846.
