Kettering was a small town located in Defiance County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2000 census. It is now a ghost town. Kettering's history dates back to 1819 when it was founded as a plantation by James Kettering and his wife Catharine. The first store in the town opened in 1824 and the first post office in 1830. The village of Kettering ceased to exist when it was merged with other villages within Defiance County in 1907. However, the ketter name still survives today as an agricultural marketing district situated south of Dayton. The community has been completely abandoned for over seventy years; however, there are occasional visits from visitors who find evidence of early settlers' lives and businesses still existing inside the walls of the former Village Hall building (now used as storage). Migration to Ohio during the 19th century brought many new immigrants to Kettering including Germans, Irishmen, Italian Americans, Poles and Lithuanians who each built their own homes orchards and gardens near what is now Main Street pedestrian mall. Agricultural production played an important role in keeping these families together and helped support local communities throughout the state during this time period. By 1900 only 5% of residents were self-employed while 60% did agriculture; however by 1930 that percentage had dropped below 30%.
