The Kettering gun safety movement began after a gunman killed four people and injured six others at the town's high school in December, 1996. The Gun Control Act of 1968 had been passed following the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, which killed 26 children and educators. NRA lobbyist Elliot Richardson was quoted as saying "If you have a clip with 10 rounds, it doesn't matter how many times you fire it, it's still an automatic weapon." In response to the gun violence in communities across America, including Kettering, Ohio organizers created the Ohio Coalition for Gun Safety in 1997. In 2002, the state of Ohio passed the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Amendments Act of 2001 which required all individuals applying for a handgun license or permit to provide their full name and Social Security Number as well as their current addresses. This law also created a five-year waiting period for applicants who did not already possess a firearms license or permit. Governor Ted Strickland vetoed this bill but its companion bill was successfully rewritten and became effective on October 1st 2003. In November 2006 two people were shot dead inside of an Akron car dealership by two men who had just bought a firearm from that store's proprietor. At least one other person was wounded during the shooting rampage at that store before shots were fired into Selfridges department store less than three miles away where several hundred customers were taking refuge. The shooter turned out to be local man Jerome Kersey Jr., 25 years old at the time of his rampage and described by police as being "a loner" with no known links to any organized crime activity although he had recently expressed support for white nationalist groups on social media sites. A month later another gunman opened fire inside an Akron convenience store wounding two employees before turning himself in to police after leaving behind his weapon and empty magazine/. He later died from what authorities called gunshot wounds inflicted during surgery unrelated to this attack.
Kettering is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,682 at the 2010 census. Kettering is located on the north-central edge of Medina County and is bordered to the east by Union Township and to the west by Hubbard Township. The event drew thousands of people who enjoyed refreshments and speeches from Roosevelt before disembarking on board his train for their home communities across the state line in Sandusky, Ohio. There were also demonstrations of horse-drawn vehicles and bicycle racing throughout the day while pedestrians walked along Main Street between First National Bank & Harvey's Drug Store to view exhibits organized by local businesses exhibiting local products including cheese cake made from cow milk! A variety shows were also presented nightly beginning at 9pm underwritten by Mr Fiske (the headmaster of Central High School).
