In 1802 or 1803 John Lennon purchased land from his father-in-law Robert McCartney for $2 per acre (0·90 km²). After years of hard work he laid out extensive fields that yielded high quality hay and straw for export to London's marketplaces; he also built a mill that processed leather goods imported from England into cloth diapers for American consumers "Kettering played an important role in early America because it had ready access to markets for its Agricultural Products." Milton Seltzer wrote: "It [Kettering] became one of America's most important textile cities due to its close proximity to major English markets...In addition to its status as an important manufacturing center,...Kettering also served as a key crossroads linking large sections of eastern Ohio with Midwest markets." The city developed rapidly into a significant economic center thanks largely to two factors: its location strategic along roads leading westward into Pennsylvania; and its ability to process large quantities of agricultural products exported from central Ohio via railroads destined for Philadelphia or New York City

Today, ketting is known for its agricultural products production which includes corn meal (a type of flour), sugar beets (a type of vegetable), hay bales (a kind of straw Veterans Affairs Hospital patients are given during their hospital stay), applesauce (made from apples or other vegetables boiled until thick) and onions
