Kettering was founded by George Washington in 1786 as a small town in what is now West Virginia. The town, then called "Chesterfield", was moved to Kettering after the Revolutionary War and became a village. In 1814, Kettering became an incorporated city and the first in Ohio. During the 19th century, Kettering experienced growth due to its location as a transportation hub on the Great Lakes region and its role as an agricultural center. The city also developed into a manufacturing center with production of textiles, shoes, appliances, munitions and other goods. In 1870, kettering merged with neighboring towns of Portsmouth and Bedford to form the new City of Dayton. In 1938, kettering was destroyed by a fire that swept through the downtown area. Despite this setback, kettering continued to grow during World War II due to its importance as a military base for the United States Army Air Forces throughout much of Europe and Asia. After the war ended, kettering experienced rapid population growth as people transitioned from agriculture to industry. However, during the 1970s and 1980skettering experienced significant poverty and social unrest which led to several arrests and firings of city officials. In 1992, ketting reverted back to its pre-war status as an unincorporated community before it officially dissolved in 2000
In 1806, the town of Kettering was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church. The town was named after Colonel John Kettering and his family who donated land for the church. In 1828, Kettering became a county seat and in 1892 it incorporated as a city.
