The first school in Kettering was built on land that later became the University of Dayton campus. In 1824, ketter residents voted to incorporate as a village. That same year, they voted to change their name to kettering Township. In 1830, they elected James Dennett as their first township trustee. In 1835, they adopted a new constitution and changed their name to ketting Village again. That same year, they elected George Ladd as their first mayor. The village did not grow rapidly and by 1840 it had only 10 homes and 5 businesses - all of which were used for agricultural purposes. However, ketting Village survived until 1850 when it bequeathed its land to the newly formed city of Dayton after being forced out of its own municipality by vote thereon! The village continued until 1962 when it merged with neighboring townships (to form current-day Montgomery County).
