Kettering is a town in the southern part of Ohio, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Kettering is the most populous town in Butler County and the second most populous town in Warren County after Middletown, Ohio. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Kettering were French traders and explorers who visited the area during the 17th century. In 1692, General George Rogers Clark's army invaded North America from Canada and discovered what would become Ohio. After raiding Native American villages for food and materials he named this new land "Ohio" after one of his commanders, Sir John Moore. In 1802, General William Hull built a fort on an island in Muskingum River which became known askettering because it was one of several small towns located thereabouts. The fort served as an important military post until 1813 when it was destroyed by Ulysses S. Grant's forces while they were besieging Fort Meigs near Toledo during the Burning of Washington campaign against President James K. Polk.. In 1814, kettering incorporated as a village under the name Butlerstown with a population of 137 residents; however, it did not take hold until 1830 when voters approved a measure giving village status to all towns within Butler County except Middletown which had retained its township form of government since 1800 A major reason for Village Status being given to kettering was due to its location between two large manufacturing plants (the Stewart Machine Company Complex on Main Street and Wabash Brewery on Clinton Avenue) that made up much of Butler County at that time: these companies processed agricultural products such as flour and oil into finished products that sold throughout northeastern Ohio Middletown also enjoyed some success thanks to its role as a commercial center for both rural areas around it including farming communities along I-70 Toombs Road west of Cleveland and industrial areas to the east including Beechwood Products Factory before eventually dying out circa 1930s due largely to economic changes brought about by Automotive Manufacturing Industry growth elsewhere Middletown lost some importance when those industries moved out west but continued having significant industry presence through various struggles over control over transportation corridors leading into Cleveland - finally relinquishing control over these assets in 1978 following nationalization by Ford Motor Company Kettering experienced rapid growth starting around World War II due although agricultural production gradually declined beginning in earnest after 1945 followed by declines among other sectors; however, remaining tiger-like levels of employment led to high population density especially prevalent downtown where many storefronts remain today Downtown Kettering has seen numerous construction projects ongoing – notably renovation/updating of old brick buildings dating back centuries onto modern architecture along Clinton Avenue - resulting in increased visibility &CommercialActivityDowntownKettering
On July 24, 1868, Kettering became the capital of Ohio after the state legislature appropriates $300,000 for its construction. The city was founded by farmers who wanted to avoid the cost of moving to Cincinnati. Kettering's first mayor was Elias Howe. In 1902, Kettering hosted the World's Columbian Exposition and benefited from increased trade with Chicago due to its location in the "Great Western Plain." In 1923, the city lost its charter and became a town until it regained it in 1933. In 1934, city officials built a new downtown library which remains in use today. Kettering has had several mayors over its history including Wm. A. Coulter (1898-1904), John Pritchett (1906-1910), Franklin D. Roosevelt (1945-1953), and Bertram Goodyear (1974-1979).
