BB guns have a long and proud history in Kettering, Ohio. The Gunslinger Rifle Company was founded in 1881 by J.H. Dickey, the son of an early settler in the area. The company produced rifles and pistols for sale to farmers and ranchers throughout the Midwest. In 1911, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which still operates today as a subsidiary of Remington Arms Corporation. The first BB guns were made by George Dixon of Dayton, Ohio in 1889. These weapons were called “Pineapple” rifles because their barrels were made from pineapples that had been soaked in gasoline and then heated until they became soft enough to fire pellets. Dixon’s successors continued production of these firearms into the 1920s. In 1925, Henry Abraham designed and built the world’s first air-cooled BB gun known as the Abraham Gun (now known as the Airguns International Model #AB). This weapon was manufactured at his old factory in Dayton until it closed in 1967 due to federal regulation limiting airgun sales to persons over 21 years old. Abraham is considered one of America’s most significant shooters and is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Dayton with his pistols and rifle victims from that period of his life
