Kent, Ohio is a town in Ashland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Turner metropolitan area. The first permanent American settlement in what is now Kent was made on February 6, 1788 by Captain John Smith and his team of pioneers from Rhode Island. At that time, it was a part of the Northwest Territory. On March 3, 1800, General James Wilkinson appointed Reverend Stephen Decatur as the first pastor of the Methodist Church in Kent and began to build a chapel there. In 1803, General Dearborn donated land for an academy in Kent and construction began on November 12 that year by Reverend Samuel Morse. In 1812-1813 public school teaching began in Kent when Wm Higginson donated land to this effect and also started building a schoolhouse on South Main Street which served as both the town hall until 1898 and also became home to many local businesses including A & M Brewery (now Pabst Brewing Company), Central Millinery Shop (now Macy's Department Store), Jockey Club House (later known as The Masonic Temple), Kelleher Ford (later known as Kelleher Chevrolet) and several other smaller businesses before it closed its doors in 1969 after 101 years of service.
