Kent, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Muskegon County. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 97,471. The city is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the eastern border of Ohio's "Great Lakes" region. The first European permanent settlers in what is now Kent were French colonists who landed on the Miami River in 1688. They built Fort Dearborn on a bluff overlooking the river they named for their leader, Admiral Marquette. The town was founded as an agricultural community by General John Graves Simcoe in 1765 and was renamed for George Rogers Clark when he became governor of Virginia in 1775. In 1803, after President James K. Polk ordered Major General Anthony Wayne to lead an expedition against Tecumseh's Indian allies at present-day Mason City, Iowa (the only time that Polk ordered such an attack), Clark traveled to Detroit to raise money for his venture and purchased land at Kenton Creek near modern day Uniontown Township with development plans still in draft form at that time. Clark's campaign headquarters were also located here from 1803 until his death soon afterward; today they are buried among other honors inside Mount Auburn Cemetery adjacent to American University which Clark helped found as well as one of America’s first law schools – now part of Washington University School Of Law – and served as its first president from 1849 until his death aged 78 years old on July 25th, 1865 just three months shy of his ninetieth birthday (he would have been eighty-four when he died). In 1800 Lucius Vandalus erected a large frame building known as “The Grange” west side OF Main Street which served as courthouse until 1907 when it burned down; later it was replaced by Masonic Temple which stood until 1951 before being demolished also leaving behind extensive evidence including two masonic lodges still extant within view today from across US Route 22! After Independence many families began moving out into this newly formed country so settlement moved further westward then upriver like elsewhere so lots changed hands often over time not always resulting in positive results since early pioneer days! The last major concentration around water took place around 1920s with farmsteads gradually disappearing along with many small industry businesses starting up like cheese making etc….. following World War II there was less growth but more suburbanization taking place especially hereabouts due mainly to technology advances some 3MIL people living Thereabouts Now…….. The area that is now Kent was first populated by the Hennepin tribe of Indians, who were later replaced by the Potawatomi. In 1824, the town of Kent was founded by John Davenport and James Ketchum. In 1829, General David Sherman visited Kent and declared it to be an independent county. The town continued to grow and become a major center for commerce until after World War II when its economy shifted focus towards agriculture. The early days of Kent are marked by some key moments including the construction of the first bridge over the Scioto River in 1857, when another prominent resident, George Stephenson, built a railroad bridge across Ohio River. This helped stimulate growth in what would become known as downtown Kent and helped make it one of central Ohio's most important cities. Additionally, during this time there was also significant progress made in transportation within central Ohio thanks to advancements such as completion of roads and railways which facilitated easier access to jobs throughout the area. Today, downtown Kent remains an important focal point for economic development within central Ohio while also preserving its historical atmosphere.

It was named for George Kent, an Englishman who had settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the early 1790s. By 1870, however, Kent had shrunk to only 3,500 people and its economy depended largely on agriculture. During postwar years there were significant changes as well:Kent became one of the most diverse cities in America with more than 60% of its residents being African Americans. In 2003, however,Kent lost its status as an incorporated city and became instead a village under charter from the Village Council through an amendment to the Township Act
