This event helped spur development in the area as settlers began building homes and businesses. In 1865, when Cleveland was founded, it included part of present-day Kenton Township. The township's first post office was established in 1868. By 1870, there were over 1,000 residents living in Kent Township and it had become a center for industry and commerce. Kent, Ohio is one of the most recent and rapidly growing communities in the United States. It was incorporated as a town on December 12, 1806, and became a city on February 20, 1907. The first post office in Kent opened on October 1, 1827. The original town plat called it "Nanticoke", but it was changed to "Kent" after Mrs. Martha Noyes donated land to the town for $100. The first hotel in Kent was built on Main Street by Captain Wm. Fenton around 1830-31. By 1840 there were two hotels and four stores in the community; three were operated by Fenton himself and one by his son-in-law John Carruth (1803-76). There were also several residences including Mrs. Noyes' home and Mr. Carruth's house (now known as 4th Street Baptist Church). By 1870 there were only five businesses left in the community while only one school existed; that building burned down in 1872 during an electrical storm caused by drought conditions following a severe winterstorm that hit at about the same time across much of Ohio Valley region including Cleveland and Cincinnati In 1879 voters approved a resolution establishing a water system necessary for city growth due to lack of representation from wealthy landowners who could provide enough money to maintain their own supplies That same year saw construction begin on what is now First National Bank Building which served as both bank and courthouse until 1923 when it closed its doors permanently after becoming too small for its needs In 1886 voters passed a resolution allowing female residents to vote although no women ever actually resided within the limits of Kent until 1912 when Lena Pugh moved into her first house within village limits . Additionally between 1888 and 1896 rapid development took place with new churches being erected including First Baptist Church (1888) Methodist Episcopal Church (1896), Presbyterian Chapel (1902), Lutheran church (1905), Methodism church second temple built 1909–10 (now known as Stowell House Museum), Our Lady Of Fatima Catholic church merged into Immaculate Conception Parish circa 1910 – present day , Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church 1930s/40s addition ), Second BaptistChurch 1911 & 1917 additions ) all located north side of current downtown east side street grid which formed edge of then open agricultural land today used mostly for parking lots & other industrial uses
Kent, Ohio was first settled in 1796 by George Washington and his family. The town was named after the Kent County, England-based family of Thomas Jefferson. The territory that would become Kent was part of the Northwest Territory until it became a part of Indiana in 1803. In 1813, the town's residents voted to incorporate as a village. On July 10, 1817, the village was renamed London on the Kentucky River after its then-incorporating county seat, which had been moved from Frankfort to London due to overpopulation. The original London post office operated from December 17, 1800 until May 7, 1802.
