In 1814, a local farmer, James Niles, purchased 4 acres (1 hectare) in what is now downtown Kent from George Washington Carver for $4 per acre (0.24 per kilometer). Niles developed this land into an important agricultural center and founded the city of Kent in 1835. He also built several homes in downtown Kent which are still standing today. Kent experienced economic growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to its location at the intersection of two major transportation routes – Interstate 75 and US Route 25 – as well as its status as a key manufacturing center for textiles and other goods. Many historic buildings remain in downtown Kent including Niles' home, Lewis House Museum Annex, National Bank Building/Building No 2 (now used as office space), First Presbyterian Church (now used as a museum), and Capitol Hill Methodist Episcopal Church (now used as apartments). During World War II, production at nearby Geauga County munitions plants helped to spurKent's economy into new heights; however, many businesses closed during wartime due to rationing policies imposed by war policymakers. By 1945 all but one business in downtown Kent had either closed or been forcibly replaced by housing developments or government-owned stores such as Department Stores #2 and #3A. A few years later most businesses had reopened but some remained closed until they were eventually demolished or converted into apartment buildings during the 1970s–1980s redevelopment boom period phase of Downtown Kent's history
Kent, Ohio is a small town in the southern part of the United States. It was founded by parents who left Newark, New Jersey for economic reasons in 1881. The town has a population of about 12,000 people and is located in the Miami-Dade County area. The town was originally named Crockerstown after Maj. Gen. John P. Crocker, one of the first American officers to fight in World War I. In 1922, the name was changed to Kent because of its location on the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana. The name comes from an English counties called Kent and Essex which border each other to the south and east respectively. Kent was declared a city by an act of Congress on November 2, 1924; it had been proposed by Mayor John Fenton and approved by voters two months earlier. On December 12, 1925, it became the capital of Miami-Dade County when that county was created from parts of Dade and Miami-Dade Counties combined. The downtown core is home to several large commercial buildings dating back to the early 1800s including The State Bank (now Wells Fargo), First Congregational Church (1889), Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1914), Post Office (1925), rubber plant (1927) and many more smaller structures throughout its history. Many local businesses still operate today including: Friendship Coffee & Cafe (founded in 1948); Lighthouse Bakery & Café(founded 1978); Toys 'R Us; Joe's Pizza; Second Harvest Food Bank; Home Depot; Western Auto Parts store; JCPenney.; McDonald's restaurant which opened in 1987 inside First National Bank building on Flagler Street; King's Hardware store which closed in 1984; etc.).
