The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Ironton were French missionaries in 1795. The town was platted in 1836 by John Prentice and named for Lieutenant Colonel James H. Ironton (1765-1847), who served as captain of engineers during the construction of the Erie Canal. In 1840, Ironton became one of eleven townships within the new Fayette County, Ohio area; it remained an agricultural town until after World War II when industry began to grow rapidly there. After years of growth and modernization, however, many residents left Ironton for better opportunities outside the community. In recent decades there has been a rebirth of interest in its history and culture; visitors are becoming more attracted to visit its attractions such as its beautiful architecture and rich cultural heritage.

Ironton is a village in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Ironton was Nicholas Ladd who came to what is now Ironton on May 10, 1824 from Washington Township, one of the original 12 townships founded by President George Washington during his executive power as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. In 1827 Nicholas's grandson James Ladd donated land and built a sawmill on the river near present day North Union Road. The mill was destroyed by a fire in 1830 but a new mill was built on the same site in 1833 and continued operation until 1951. In 1851 Ironton became a town when it formed together with other towns within Butler County when it was organized as a result of an act of legislature which provided for consolidation of certain counties into one unit under the guidance and control of a board of trustees appointed by governor John Fenton. The town plat was filed with state government on July 3, 1852 and construction began on its public square soon after. Of note are two schools that were built as part of this effort: Stroud School (1857) in west central Ironton and Kessler School (1859) southwest of town along Summit Avenue. The main industry until about 1910 had been farming although there were also some small manufacturing businesses around then such as shoe shops and fabric stores. Manufacturing activity has since declined overall due to competition from more efficient methods developed elsewhere while agriculture has become more important both locally and nationally due to changing global trends over time including increased demand for food products exported abroad). However, there are still several small businesses located here active today such as CVS Pharmacy (founded 1984), FirstEnergy Solutions Inc., AARP - Akron/Canton Chapter (founded 2003), PNC Bank & Trust Company
