Ironton is a small town in Summit County, Ohio, and it has been home to residents since the early 1800s. Ironton is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area. Ironton is located on the shore of Lake Erie, about 12 miles southwest of downtown Youngstown and 14 miles east of Warren. The first settler in what would become Ironton was Nicholas Kelleher in 1814. He built a log cabin on the current site of his house in 1824 while construction was being done on nearby Fort Pitts Landing which served as an arsenal during the period when America's first war for independence was fought. In 1829, John Ladd bought land adjacent to Kelleher's cabin and began to build a community called "Laddville." In 1830, he sold his interest in Laddville to George Brown and others who named it "Brownsville" after Brown himself. In 1831, James Cushman purchased land adjoining Brownsville from Brown and started to build a log cabin known as "Cushman's Mill". This mill became known as Cushman Hall after him. In 1835, David Sills arrived from Lawrence County, Pennsylvania and established Sillsburgh on land that had been part of Laddville since 1830. In 1840, James Gosinger moved from Indiana to settle near present day Ironton with his family and founded Gosinger's Township which included present day Ironton along with portions of both Townshipships of Warren and Youngstown (now part of Warren County). With additions by other settlers over time – most notably by Ezekiel Stroud – Ironton grew rapidly into one of North America's largest towns by 1860 with a population exceeding 2,500 people living within its limits plus 200 or so additional residents scattered throughout what are now 15 municipalities in northern Ohio including: Akron/Summit City; Canton/Middletown; Cleveland Heights; Duncan; Elyria/Elyria Township; Fairborn/Fairfield Township; Geauga Heights; Highland Heights/Highland Park; Hurley Heights/Hurley Borough; Latrobe Hills"; Liverpool Heights/Liverpool Village ; Miamisburg/Miamisburg Township ; Noblexford Township (now unincorporated); Orchard Park (); Poland Springs (); Quaker Ridge (); Richboro (); Stone Creek ()); Tolnay (); Vine Grove (). According to the 2010 census, there were 5,826 people living in Ironton township (of which 3% were Native Americans), 7% lived in Canonsburg borough (a separate municipality within Springdale county), 98% were White American citizens age 25 or older (), 6% were Black American citizens age 25 or older (), 1% were Asian American citizens age 25 or older (), 1% lived inside Indian reservations (), 3% were African Americans ages 16–25 years old (), 0% were Hispanic American citizens ages 16–25 years old (). Of resident adults age 65 years or older(), 51%, 79%, 82%, 85%, 89%, 97%, 100%.

In 1828, Ironton came under control of the United States government and was renamed Stroudsburg. during this time it had become an important center for military purposes as it housed both U.S. forces and British troops during the War of 1812. In 1871, The Indianapolis & Erie Railroad reached Ironton and began to provide rapid access to local businesses and services with its new station located on Main Street. This helped make Ironton one of America's most vibrant towns during this time period. Despite these positive changes, however, economic conditions declined over the years and eventually led to its decline as well. Today, Ironton is largely a residential community with few commercial interests remaining aside from some agricultural production

Ironton was founded in 1814 as a small, unincorporated community in the extreme northeast corner of Ohio. The village gradually grew, and by 1868 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1898 Ironton became the county seat of Washington County.
