In 1876, Ohio entrepreneur George W. Stephenson began construction of the Erie Canal in Ironton. Shortly thereafter, he erected a toll booth on the canal to collect money for the canal project. The business was successful and Stephenson continued to operate it until 1892. In 1896, he donated his toll booth and other equipment to the Ohio State University in Columbus for use as a museum. In 1912, the university added an exhibit on optics and light technology to its collection. In 1932, Ohio State University's Optical Laboratory moved from its original building on High Street in Columbus to neoclassical facilities at 350 N High Street in Ironton. The lab continues to research and develop optical technologies today.
Ironton is a small village in central Ohio, United States. The population was 7,005 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton-Middletown-Beaven Township, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ironton is located on the eastern border of Trumbull County and the southern edge of Holmes County. Ironton was founded in 1796 by Samuel Coe and others as a trading post on the Scioto River between Cincinnati and Cleveland. In 1801, Ironton became part of Ohio Territory when that state was created from parts of Kentucky and Virginia. In 1815, Ironton was renamed for General James Wilkinson who had led British forces during the Mexican–American War. In 1868, Trumbull County was formed from parts of Holmes County. The village became an incorporated town in 1870. On November 3, 1880, it merged with Dayton to form what is now called Dayton-Middletown-Beaven Township. The name change came about because when they first consolidated their land there were more than one hundred different businesses operating in Ironton alone (including thirty three stores and twenty one taverns). The local paper mill closed in the 1970s but has been reborn as a museum with exhibits on early industry and life in Ironton during its heyday before becoming a bedroom community for Dayton proper until 2000 when it lost its status as an inner city to nearbyDaytona Beach/Maysville due to population growth while Ironton remained largely rural

In 1922, American photographer Edwin Hirsch introduced the world's first digital image scanner into commercial photography. Thescanner became popular among professional photographers because it could be easily transported and set up at locations where there were no physical cameras or negative sleeves available.
In 1876, the Boston firm of J.B.S. Henschel & Sons produced the first optical instrument in the world, a eyepiece called an "Henschel Telescope." The company continued to produce telescopes and other optical equipment until it merged with Lord Rayleigh's company in 1922.
Ironton is a town in Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron metropolitan area. Ironton was founded on December 12, 1821 by John Dutton and his brothers-in-law James Gifford and Amos Kendall as a post office called "New Beginnings". In 1825, Ironton became the county seat of Butler County. The first courthouse in Ironton was built in 1827. The city of Ironton was formed in 1932 from portions of the original town of New Beginnings and Battle Creek Township. New Beginnings had been combined with other towns in Butler County when it became part of the new state of Ohio following its creation on January 3, 1901. In 1957, portions of Waterloo Township were transferred to form what would become known as Battle Creek Township again within Butler County while still remaining part of Ironton proper. On February 9th 2006 an agreement was made between the city and township to merge their governments effective March 1st 2006 through a process called consolidation which would have eliminated all but 10 administrative positions within both municipalities making them one entity under one mayor/council. This merger never took place due to lack of funding from either side however; this decision has been blamed for contributing to declining enrollments at Battle Creek High School and later creating tension between the two municipalities over budgeting issues which have continued to be a problem ever since.
