In 1875, a group of farmers in Ironton formed the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Club to improve the accuracy of firearms. They shot a few rounds at an exhibition event, but found that they could only hit paper targets 50-70% of the time. The club met again in 1876 and decided to build a shooting range. The first target was shot on October 1st, 1876, at 8 o’clock in the morning by member Fenton W. Bridge Jr., who hit it with his rifle at 100 yards. The range was opened to the public for $2 per hour in May of 1877. In 1880, members built a small building on State Road 516 near where present day Ironton High School is located. This building served as their shooting ground until 1912 when they moved to their new home on Park Road East which still stands today. In 1916, members built another small building on State Road 516 just east of present day Ironton High School which served as their training ground from 1916-1918 before moving back to their old home on Park Road East. In 1922, membership increased to over 200 and they started purchasing land east of Ironton high school for summer use which would eventually become their Shooting Range Complex (now known as Copley Sportsplex). Three years later, membership totaled 300 and they purchased additional land west of Ironton high school which would also be used for shooting ranges and training facilities during the summer months
Ironton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, with a population of 46,715 as of 2010. It is the county seat of Stark County and lies in the southeastern corner of the Buckeye State. Ironton was founded on May 3, 1800 by pioneers named John Fenton and James McKnight and named for General Anthony Wayne who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The city was incorporated on November 15, 1871, from portions of Stark County. The city has been known for its agricultural production since early days. In 1868, Ironton became home to one of the first commercial grain elevator facilities in America when it was built by Elisha Pease and Cyrus McCormick at what is now Seventh Avenue and North Main Street. The primary crops grown in Ironton today include corn, soybeans, wheat and other grains; fruits (apples, grapeseed oil), vegetables (zucchini slicers), poultry (chicken coupes) and deer hunting supplies/equipment/supplies during deer season; Ironton also has a number of businesses that provide services to its residents such as professional editors for local papers such as The Columbus Dispatch and The Cincinnati Enquirer as well as event planners like Live Nation who provide live entertainment throughout Greater Cleveland each year
