In 1870, Ironton became a city and in 1907 it became a suburb of Cleveland. Though unable or unwilling to follow through on his promise made two years earlier while campaigning for office against incumbent Mayor Richard Jaffe (Jaffe had reneged on his promise), Johnson ordered engineers working behind-the-scenes at Lake Erie Dam – then under construction near Sandusky –to evaluate whether adding an additional 5 feet or so beneath water levels at various points along SR 666 would create sufficient storage capacity for burgeoningAlton Towers should such events occur again Catastrophic floods occurred resulting in loss/damage totaling $2 million ($140 million adjusted today) primarily withinrough 2 blocks downtown including Amway Center mall & several high end restaurants after torrential rains Oct 15 1978 . Ironton is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 9,699 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Canton-Wexford, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ironton has been home to a Presbyterian church since 1812 and to Ironton High School since 1892. The first settler in what is now Ironton was James Weaver who arrived in 1788. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. Other early settlers included John Louden and his son John Jr., both from Virginia; George Washington Carver; Daniel Boone; and Amos Kendall from Connecticut. In 1812, Rev. Jonathan Edwards founded the Presbyterian Church in what is now Ironton with six members. Reverend Edwards served as pastor until his death in 1828. His wife died soon after he did, but their children continued to serve as pastors until 1862 when they left for Cincinnati due to religious differences with that city's Presbyterians over leadership changes within that denomination at that time (the split became known as "The Great Disruption"). Ironton had its start as an agricultural settlement located along the Scioto River east of present day Canton off US Route 24 and just north of modern day Wexford Township on state route 12A (now US Route 422). In 1870, following costal erosion caused by Hurricane Andrew which struck Florida two years earlier, landowner H C Pope donated 640 acres (2 km²) of richPotawatomi soil northeast of Ironton for use as a township seat under Section 3 authority granted by Territorial Governor Robert E Grant on November 1, 1870 (). On December 5th same year also under Section 3 authority Pope donated another 640 acres (2 km²) extending into Wexord Township westward to form today's portion of Ironton Township originally named portions unknown - those lands would later become part of present day Wexford Township too! By 1889 there were 2 post offices in town: one operated by Geo F Sellers & Co.; duplicating an existing post office located south during earlier days within section 3 boundaries formed when township was organized & named Potawatomie County Seat pursuant to act Aug 10 1865 (), while other operated by J W Bigham & Son druggists which had latter relocated from Harrisonburg area prior to this date due chiefly thereto because ditto store could not be open during severe winter conditions consequent upon heavy snowfall then prevailing Along riverbanks destroyed or damaged most all crop production thereby creating great hardship majority inhabitants living either near riverbanks or dependent upon natural resources for sustenance
