Ironton, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio located on the Scioto River in the north-central part of the state. It was founded by hardy farmers who started settlement around 1812 and became a popular agricultural center during the 19th century. Ironton is now a small city with a population of about 32,000 people that includes a mix of rural and urban residents. The town was named for Ironton, Michigan, which at that time lay just east of present-day Ironton on what is now State Road 711. The name stuck and has been used ever since as an identifier for the town. The first settler to arrive in what is now Ironton was Captain John Cook in 1812 and he named his new community after his native England’s County Durham region where he had been born some years earlier. Cook's original village consisted only of his house and six other crude log buildings, but it quickly grew into one of Ohio's most important agricultural centers due to its location on the Scioto River between two large timberland sweeps being developed by Daniel Boone and others early settlers." Ironton remained an important farming community through much of the 19th century before becoming known more for its manufacturing industry which grew out of local production shortages during World War II; however, much recent industrial development has occurred in downtown Ironton including light industrial, heavy manufacturing, office space addition developer Focus Ventures LLC., educational opportunities with nearby Pickerington University, among others."

Ironton is a borough in Athens County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. Ironton was founded in 1871 and named after Ironton Township, Michigan. It became a borough in 1907.
The area now known as Ironton was first settled by the Shawnees in the late 18th century. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne and his army invaded and defeated the Creek Nation near present-day Ironton. The British were later allowed to settle in this area after they were victorious in the Battle of Fallen Timbers. By 1830, Ironton had become a distinct township within Athens County. A post office was established at Ironton in 1836, and it remained in operation until 1903. Ironton was platted on March 16, 1838 by John C. Seddon Jr., an agent for the Ohio Land Company. The town's name is derived from its location on International Road (now US 441) about two miles west of Athens Falls. At that time, only a small part of what is now Ironton was included within Athens County; most of it was annexed by Cincinnati in 1840. In 1863, during the American Civil War, Ironton became a strategic military outpost between Union forces stationed at Cincinnati and Confederate forces located at Roscommon Junction on the Cumberland River. For many years afterward, local residents supplied food and ammunition to both sides while their homes lay under siege or destroyed by battle damage; such activity is still remembered today through annual events celebrated in memory of those who served their country during The Great War
