Ironton, Ohio is a city in and the county seat of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ironton was founded in 1834 by General John Wilkinson as a small community on the Scioto River west of Youngstown, then part of Upper Michigan Territory. In 1836 Ironton became an incorporated town and in 1840 it became a city. The first municipal building was built in 1843 on Main Street between State and High Streets (now Broad Ripple Avenue). In 1865 Ironton passed an ordinance prohibiting Negroes from owning firearms within its limits. This law remains effective to this day. In 1870 Ironton annexed the village of Eastlake to its borders; Eastlake had been founded as a farming community by Irish immigrants in 1854. In 1898 new laws were enacted outlawing most types of semiautomatic handguns and assault rifles with detachable magazines that held more than 10 rounds each – these were subsequently repealed in 1999 under President Bill Clinton’s executive order “Handgun Control Act of 1993” which also outlawed any type of military-style assault rifle without a magazine that could hold more than 15 rounds per weapon. Assault rifles continued to be available until 2004 when they were finally banned nationwide under federal law following the Columbine Elementary School shooting in Littleton Colorado The city's skyline is dominated by The Gifford Machine Shop Building which has been home to various businesses including JCPenney since 1967

In addition to its role as an agricultural center, Ironton also became known for its manufacturing sector - including automotive parts, building materials and home improvement products - during the late 19th century. Over time, however, the industry began to decline as new technologies replaced older ones. Ironton is a small town in the eastern part of Ohio, located about 18 miles southwest of Columbus. It has a population of just over 6,000 people today and was founded in 1836 by immigrants from Hungary. The town initially grew up around the Ironton Canal, which ran through its center. Today, most of the village is located on the banks of the canal. The first settlers to Ironton were Hungarian refugees who had come overland from Transylvania Province in Romania during the 1830s. They built their homes along Canai Turnpike (now Old National Road), a short distance north of where they now live. By 1840, however, the refugees had all departed for other parts of Ohio. A group of Germans also moved to Ironton that year; they arrived via wayfarers’ trails running east-west through central Ohio. They built log cabins on Bald Eagle Hill (then known as Oak Point) across from what is now First Baptist Church and established a trading post at what is now White Mill Pond. In 1835, President Andrew Johnson issued an executive order authorizing American Revolutionary War veteran John Morgan to build a canal between Cincinnati and Terre Haute into which he could bring goods bought back home from Europe for sale in America. In response to this new development, several local landowners began offering parcels of land for sale within walking distance of their houses near the canalside locks and barges used to transport goods downriver. The first landowner to sell his parcel was Nathan Sperry Sr., who named it after himself – Ironton Canal Township – because he saw it as an opportunity to develop his holdings into some kind of business venture with potential commercial interests downriver.(1) During its early years, Ironton thrived on trade thanks largely to its location at one end of oneof two major canals connecting Ontario County with Franklin County on the opposite side of Greater Cincinnati.(2) This commerce fostered social interactions among residents that remain strong today: many families still reside close together mile-long streets bordered by century-old houses.(3) Some notable businesses that operated outfitted exclusively or primarily by local residents include Pfeffer & Sons (a bakery), Snively Coal Miners Supply Co., Northern Connections Telephone Company(later Bell Atlantic telephone company), Wernher & Kappel hardware store (later Hometown Computer Store), Doudna's general store, and Gable's grocery store.(4) When Toledo becamethe capital cityofthe United Statesin1865andthe Erie CanalWas completedtohis west,,commerce alongtheIrontoniancanal diminished significantly due to increasedDistanceToOwensvilleand beyond.(5) However,,it wasn't until1875thatIrontoniaactuallyreceiveditsfirstImportationoftherailroad: agrarian implement dealer Eli Whitney brought over 50 tons worthof Indian hemp seeds from Canadaonto his farm near Allentown.(6) This early boom period ended when railroad transportation became more accessible and efficient than horse or wagon travel; instead, farmers increasingly turned to irrigation methods such as canalsand ditches for agriculture rather than rely solely on riversand valleysfor production.(7) It wasn't until 1901 when George Wernher opened his extensive hardware store next door at 120 Main Street that rotary printing technology truly came into being hereabouts; Wernher printed posters advertising agricultural products available only through mail order from distant suppliers.(8) In 1916–1917MajorGeorgeFitzgerald leda large army detachment called "The Big Red One" against General Douglas MacArthur's forces during World War I; Fitzgerald later served as mayorofIrontonexactly50years agothis month.)
