In 1829, Ironton became one of six villages formed by newly appointed agents from Cleveland to serve as an agent district throughout eastern Ohio. In 1861, when Cleveland-Akron became a city, Ironton became one of its anchor points. It remained an independent municipality until 1972 when it merged into the larger city. In that year, it adopted its current name - "Ironton" - after becoming part of the new metropolitan area. Today, Ironton is home to over 20 businesses and employs over 150 people; many are involved in agriculture or manufacturing such as cheese production or paper products. Its major industries include transportation (roads and bridges), services (manufacturing businesses), retail trade (resulting from its concentration within walking distance of several large shopping malls), and information technology (the creation of two universities).
Ironton was founded in 1817 by John Ironton. The city is named after him, and he donated the land for it. It was first settlements were made on the east side of the river and then on the west side. The city was chartered in 1851. In 1870, Ironton annexed neighboring towns of Canfield and North Canton.
