In 1847, Ironton was founded by Isaac Brock and his family. The town was named after the Rocky Mountains because of their resemblance to those mountains. For many years, Ironton was a small farming community with few firearms available to its residents. However, in 1892, the US government enacted the National Firearms Act which made it necessary for citizens to have a valid firearms license and purchase firearms in order to protect themselves from criminals and other threats. This law led to the growth of gun ownership in Ironton. Today, Ironton is home to an array of businesses that provide firearm clothing and accessories for its customers. Ironton is a city in Elkhart County, Indiana, United States, and the home of Ironton College. The population was 17,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Ironton were George and Nancy Witherspoon who arrived on July 8, 1818. They built a small log cabin on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1827 they founded Ironton Academy which became a state-supported institution in 1907. In 1881 local businessmen Horace J. Knowles and Wm. Hallett organized an agricultural society that purchased 6 acres (2 km²) of land northeast of town from John Hanks for $1,000 cash and also provided four horses to help with cultivation; this group became known as "The Party Boys." The society began growing crops and selling them to other villagers through local merchants until it acquired its own mill in 1886 which allowed it to sell flour, meal, butter and other products directly to consumers throughout Northwest Indiana. In 1916–17 Samuel Clements donated land east of town along Hiwassee Creek for use as a college campus; this parcel was named after him when it was annexed by Ironton in 1923 while he still lived there (he had earlier given away ). In 1924–25 Presbyterian missionaries establishedreligious instruction buildings on campus; these were completed in 1927 when the college became affiliated with Purdue University. The school then merged with Notre Dame High School near South Bend IN to form Notre Dame/Ironton High School although both schools continueRELATED STUDENTS ARE CALLED "NORTHEAST INDIAN HIGH SCHOOL" FROM HERE ON OUT FOR LEGAL REASONS unrelated thereto). Today Ironton College hasandover 7500 undergraduate students from across Elkhart County (as well as many international students).
