Ironton, Ohio is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Muskegon County. Ironton was founded in 1837 and named for Colonel John Morton Ironton of Kentucky. Ironton is located on M-22 north of Grand Rapids and south of Mackinac City. The city occupies an area that once included part of the present-day town of Muskegon Heights and parts of the cities of Detroit and Flint. The first post office in Ironton was established in 1837, but it did not open until 1840. In 1848, the community became the site of what would become one of America's earliest industrial towns when a group led by Edwin Diller began producing iron ore from local screes near their mills. By 1860, there were over 30 businesses operating in Ironton with a total payroll worth $2 million. A new courthouse was built in 1870 to serve as a central headquarters for all these companies. In 1865, Ironton received its first railroad extension when the Michigan Central Railway arrived from Chicago via Ottawa County; this made it possible for residents to reach jobs across Muskegon County rather than having to go into Lansing or other nearby villages. The arrival of this railroad also helped spur development around downtown Ironton and along State Road 21 (now US 22) which served as both an artery into town and a connector between rural areas to the east and west sides of town respectively. This growth accelerated during World War II as many families left agricultural work behind to join industry; by 1945, downtown had reached its current size with over 100 businesses employing over 1,000 people! During this time period as well as following various Other important events such as national tragedies like 9/11 or Katrina – each adding fuel to residential fires within moments – downtown finally achieved some semblance stability with ongoing redevelopment plans starting back up again more than 10 years later last year!
