The Wilkinson family ran a small game farm near present-day downtown Ironton. They used handguns and shotguns for hunting and pest control until 1868 when they began manufacturing their own ammunition. Ammunition from this nascent company was used in the American Civil War and saw action on both sides of the conflict. In 1865, the Wilkinson family merged with other local businesses to form the Armoury & Ammunition Company. This new company manufactured artillery rounds as well as handguns, rifles, shotguns and reloading supplies. Over the years, Armoury & Ammunition Company became one of Ironton's most successful businesses. In 1924, it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Works LLC. This merger led to increased production capacity for Winchester products in Ironton as well as new sales opportunities across America. In 1937, Armoury & Ammunition Company filed for bankruptcy due to heavy competition from Winchester Works LLC's newer products. However, within a few years armoury reopened under new ownership and continued operations until its closure in 1981. Today, remnants of Armoury & Ammunition Company still operate in downtown Ironton; these days they sell reloading supplies only

Ironton was laid out in 1853 by George W. Stephenson and named after Ironton, England, where his father had been born and died. The town was originally built as a part of the larger village of New Philadelphia on the edge of present day Cleveland. At that time it was still considered a rural community by many residents because much of its economic activity took place outside the city limits or within commuting distance via public transportation or carspooling services offered by local companies such as Western Reserve Telephone Company (WRT). The growth of downtown Cleveland during this time caused more people to move into central Ironton which began to experience rapid development including new housing developments such as Ironton Manor (now known as Northgate Village) constructed on high ground east off Interstate 476 just south of downtown Cleveland serving as an upscale shopping center for families living in central Ohio while manufacturing operations continued to take place primarily in east Cleveland near Quicken Loans Arena until 1993 when those plants were closed down due to Competition from Japanese Manufacturers Incorporated (JMI) which purchased most old WWRL assets including several buildings used by WTTE including transmitter building number 2 which served as JMI's Corporate Headquarters until 1999 when it moved into nearbyakes Place mall formerly occupied by Sears store before being converted into office space again beginning in 2001 before finally being demolished in 2006 following years of complaints about environmental destruction from residents adjacent to Pioneer Square park large open landfill adjacent to stadium site urban renewal project which included demolition/ renovation/ expansion/ improvement over existing single-story brick warehouse structure erected on lot formerly occupied by light industrial Warehouse District now home to Renaissance Village residential development featuring lakeside balconies overlooking river view property situating between two large retail complexes comprising both older industrial warehouses dating back circa 1830s & 1840s & latest major redevelopment project since gentrification occurring late 1990s consisting entirely of multiple high-rise condominium towers occupy(ing) entire eastern edge/.

By 1840, there were twenty residents living in what would become Ironton. In 1892, Western Electric announced plans to build a new plant south of town at what is now known as Eckels Road/Route 322 (now Interstate 71). This would have created an enormous impact on local businesses and jobs which would continue until 1975 when it closed after being purchased by Motorola company president Leslie Armstrong for $1 million USD$. The site still stands today vacant and could be used for housing or other development purposes if given the right clearance from city planners!
