Hudson was named after Sir John Johnson who explored the region in 1792-93 while on his survey of the Northwest Territory. Johnson's expedition crossed through what is now Hudson on their way to Cleveland. In 1811-12, Daniel Boone and his troops explored and mapped much of central Ohio before returning to Kentucky via Virginia City (now Oklahoma City). In 1831, Anthony Wayne founded what would become one of America's largest lumber companies with mills located in Painesville and Hudson Village. After Wayne died in 1862, his son-in-law James Ketchum took over management from Ketchum's widow Nancy Hanks Potter. In 1923, however, most of these old buildings were destroyed by a fire that burned throughout much of downtown Hudson. Today only a few remnants remain from what once was an active community.
