Hudson was founded in 1814 by Captain John Hudson and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Warner. The name comes from Horseshoe Bend on the Muskingum River where John used to fish for eels. The town was platted in 1824 by Captain John Hudson and James Prentice after their survey of the area which included what is now Mahoning County. On October 15, 1827, Hudson submitted a petition to become a city and on November 10, 1827 it was accepted as part of the new City of Cleveland with walls constructed around it to protect it from attacks by Indians led by Chief Tecumseh. The first Mayor was Drury Barron who served until 1830 when he was replaced by Isaac Hickson. In 1830–31 there were five mayors: Bartholomew Fenton (1830–31), Isaac Hickson (1831–35), Ebenezer Cooke (1835–41), David Cuyler (1841–45), and Martin Van Buren (45). In 1850, William McKinley became President of the United States after being elected Vice President under Adams; he moved his residence from Springfield to Cleveland so that he would be nearer to Congress & campaign expenses could be paid for him there rather than having them sent back East each year on Navy ships trailed throughout America's waters like they had been under Spanish rule since earliest days! With all this going on (& more!), locals decided it would make more sense for their small town proper to stay put & grow instead of becoming another city trying hard not to be noticed but failing at both goals!) On February 1st 1870 - almost 50 years later - voters in Hudsons voted 3-1/2 hours before daylight over an issue whether or not they should annex into neighboring Warren Township! After much deliberation following several referendums held throughout that winter season...the vote finally went through Eagles Landing annexed into Mahoning County! Today’s downtown Historic District has been designated as such pursuant to legislation passed in 1990 joined together with adjoining Village Of Bedford which contains many similar buildings dating back much earlier including one original gristmill built circa 1800 just east Of Broadway across From First Baptist Church where you can still see evidence OF THAT BACK THEN DAY'S WATERPROOFING SYSTEM! And if that wasn’t enough...just off I-75 exit 5A you will find…a replica OF THE ORIGINAL LANDMARKSHIP BUILDING DESIGNED BY CAPTAIN JOHN HUDSON HIMSELF WHEN HE FIRST SETTLED DOWN IN THIS AREA OVER HALF A DECADE BEFORE ANYONE ELSE WAS EVEN THINKING ABOUT IT BUT FOR SOMEHOW WE END UP HERE!! What A Crazy Place To Be Born Anyway!!!
