In 1795, American Revolutionary War veteran Colonel George Washington passed through Hudson on his way to battle Yorktown. The community grew rapidly due to its location near major transportation routes and its access to resources such as coal and water. By 1900, the population of Hudson had reached 3,000 people. In 1920, it reached 5,000 people again – this time becoming an incorporated municipality under state law. Hudson experienced some significant changes during World War II. After German forces invaded America on September 11th 1941, local businesses supported the war effort by supplying goods and services needed for military purposes including food processing and munitions production. Many residents also volunteered for service in various capacities including working at factories or joining military units overseas. The post-war era saw rapid growth in Hudsons population once again with many new homes being built in what is now downtown Hudson Heights. Over time there has been a growing trend of mixed-income housing developments being constructed within downtown boundaries making it one of the most socio-economically diverse areas in all of Cleveland County
Hudson, Ohio is a city located in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Cuyahoga County. As of 2010, the population was 781,403 making it the largest city in Cuyahoga County and second-largest city in Ohio after Cleveland. Thecity is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hudson was founded by English colonists in 1796 as an agricultural village on the Great Lakes shoreline known as Hudson's Baytown. It became a town in 1827 and a city in 1849 after becoming part of Cuyahoga County. The current name means "hundred mile post" and has been used since 1814 when British explorer George Washington surveyed the area for Canada. The first permanent settler in what is now Hudson was James Choate who arrived from Connecticut on July 24, 1796 with his family to claim land grants from King George III at what is now called Choate Heights near present-day West Side Highway and Euclid Avenue. On December 5, 1800, Choate erected a schoolhouse at what is today Clinton Street and donated land for public use including lots along East Ninth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue which are now home to major businesses such as Greshams Pizza Place (now Papa John's Pizza) and Jamba Juice Company (later Coca Cola Refreshment). In 1802, General Anthony Wayne encampment camped here while he fought against Native Americans at Fallen Timbers Hills northwest ofpresent day Union City; this event also served as motivation for settlers to move into this area. In 1840, surveyor Augustus Kelley mapened most of present day Cuyahoga Valley including parts that are now Hudson; he named portions Beacon Hill east of Erie Boulevard (now University Circle), Northshore Road north side of I-675 south side of Euclid Avenue (now Nationwide Blvd.), Southshore Road west sideof I-675 north side of Erie Boulevard (now University Circle), Spring Lake Road northeast cornerof Cedar Lawn Drive southeast cornerof State Route 246 southwest cornerof Elmwood Dr., Green Pond Drive east endof Spring Lake Rd., Carpenter Cove west endOf Carpenter Cove
