Huber Heights was founded in 1851 by John Hobert and his family. The post office was started in 1853 and named for John Hobert Sr., who served as it's first Postmaster. In 1876, the community became a village when all of Mahoning County were annexed into Cleveland proper. The name of the Village changed to Huber Heights in 1907 when it merged with other villages in Mahoning County to form the now-defunct Mohawk Township Community College District No. 2 (now known as Youngstown State University). The shrinking population of Huber Heights has forced many businesses to move away from town, but a few remaining businesses still offer some unique experiences or products that make Huber Heights an interesting place to live and work. One such business is "The Rifle Shop" which operates out of three buildings on Main Street since 1962: one serving as a rifle range, one as an antique store, and one used as offices until 2008 when it reopened as a restaurant/bar called "The Gunner". Other businesses include "Applebees" which opened its doors in 1961 and continues to serve up delicious chicken dinners; "Lenny's Pizza" which opened its doors in 1984 and offers hand-held pizzas; "D&D Games" which started out as a hobby shop back in 1978 but now provides detailed RPG games for groups; and finally "Camelback Coffee" which began serving coffee inside a church before moving outside into their current location on High Street in 2006. Huber Heights is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,822 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded by German immigrants in 1814. The first settler in Huber Heights was Johann Huber. He and his family arrived from Franconia Township, Pennsylvania on July 24, 1814, on the Wabash River. Huber erected a cabin named "Esquimalt" on what is now State Route 6 near present-day Waverly Common. In 1821 he married Anna Maria Kuhnemann and they started a farm that produced corn, beans and other vegetables until their death in 1865. Their son Wilhelm also lived in Huber Heights before moving to Middletown Township in 1868 to start a grocery store there with partner Jacob Hildebrandt That same year saw the incorporation of the village of Huber Heights under an act of the General Assembly which granted voting rights to all free inhabitants over 21 years old within one mile of any town or center within ten miles of Cincinnati (with some exceptions). Huber Heights enjoyed its early days as an agricultural community with several hundred acres of land consisting mostly of corn and beans grown by farmers such as John Ahern and Peter Kappes respectively; However during World War II much land was taken up for military housing developments including many subdivisions located along State Routes 12 and 176 near present day Hilliard Avenue In 1956 when state highway 216 was extended eastward through rural areas adjacent to Dayton it intersected US 13 at exit 123A just north-west of downtownHubert heights US 13 became Business I-70 running concurrently with SR 216 until it was truncated southward past Wright Road leading into Middletown Township shortly after its junction with SR 316 SR 316 then became Business I-675 following its truncation eastward just beyond where US 13 crossed into Middletown Township continuing concurrent with BUS I-70 until it terminated at US 62 about 6 miles southwest of downtown Dayton Since then business activity has shifted back to groceries hemmed between Dayton's Downtown core and suburban areas
The area now known as Huber Heights was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century. The first European to live in the area was Nicholas Koloff, who built a cabin on the banks of the Maumee River in 1698. In 1814, Ohio pioneers George Stephenson and James K. Polk founded what is now Hawkinsville, Kentucky, while exploring newly acquired land in Miami County. By 1830, much of what is today Huber Heights had been developed as a small town. In 1835, John Wirtz purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of east-west road from David Lapp for $5 per acre (0.24 ha). Wirtz named his property "Huber Heights" after George Washington Huber, one of his business partners during their early years in business. Huber Heights became a thriving community with several shops and businesses located along the street that stillexist today. In 1836-37, Wirtz built a two-story house at 1225 N Market St., which remains one ofHubert's most popular tourist destinations today. In 1861 & 1862 (the year after Ohio achieved statehood), Hubert served as Mayor of Mentor Township and later served as Mayor of Toledo before retiring in 1886 due to health problems he had been having for some time prior to that date; he died at home on October 25th aged 83 years old . He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery near Toledo proper where many other prominent residents also rest including: Simon Guggenheim (1859 – 1938), Clarence Darrow (1892 – 1936), Franklin D Roosevelt (1932 – 1945), Jessie Owens (1928 – 1984).
