Hilliard, Ohio is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stark County. The unincorporated community of Hilliard lies within the city limits. Hilliard was platted on April 20, 1802 by Daniel Henshaw and James Irvine as part of a larger town named for Christopher Hilliard (1754-1828), an early settler in that area. The town boundaries were amended in 1829 to include what are now the neighborhoods of Brookside and Stanton Heights. In 1836, Hilliard became one of the original sixteen townships in Stark County. It remained an unincorporated village until it became a city on February 17, 1907. The first store in town opened on May 1, 1802 by John Aiken with two shelves and a table inside his house on High Street. By 1830 there were ten stores open in town with $10 000 worth of merchandise inventory; all but two closed by 1840 due to competition from Cleveland's burgeoning industrial sector. Aiken's successor as proprietor - George Wickersham - continued to operate the business until his death in 1850; since then it has been run by three generations of descendants: son George Wickersham Jr., grandson George Wickersham III and great grandson Everett Wickersham Sr.. At its peak during World War II there were fifty-six businesses operating out of thirteen shops including fourteen automotive plants employing some 2 500 workers; however only five survived through 1945 when production shifted to newly built plants elsewhere in the country During prohibition there were twenty-one businesses licensed to sell booze; eight did so successfully while eleven failed including one which went bankrupt shortly after prohibition ended The post office was established at Hilliard on March 16, 1825 and served until it was discontinued effective November 30th 1923 due to lack of demand from residents who preferred receiving mail via horse or cart instead In 1907 Hilliard become one of seventeen townships within Stark County declined following statewide annexation into Cleveland without their vote being given prior thereto by Governor Peter Buell ); however this change didn't last long as most township status quo reverted back under new Municipal Government Law which prohibited consolidation without consent from each municipality involved .
